FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Health...what's hair got to do with?

African American women spend billions of dollars and many hours on hair care services and products.  The Network for a Healthy California's African American Campaign has capitalized on the trusted relationship between a stylist and their clients to deliver healthy messages in a personal and culturally competent way.

  • Formative research was done to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of delivering fruit, vegetable, and physical activity messages through beauty salon stylists in the Los Angeles Region and the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Key informant interviews were conducted with African American hair stylists.
  • Many stylists felts that delivering healthy messages would not only improve their clients' lives and their community, but would also improve the salon's business.
