The diabetes epidemic is a public health priority in California. Between 1996 and 2006 the prevalence of diabetes in California increased by 40%. In 2006 the number of Californians with diabetes was about 2.5 million or 8.2% of the adult population. Prediabetes, a condition that often leads to type 2 diabetes, is so common that current estimates range from 30-40% of the adult population. Diabetes can lead to serious complications: Nephropathy, Neuropathy, Retinopathy and premature death.
