This article emphasizes that management of the sound limb plays a key role when planning a rehabilitation program for the lower-limb amputee with diabetes. People with diabetes who have one amputation are at risk for future amputations, whether due to continued diabetic complications or biomechanical changes from using a prosthesis. Patients should be advised of this risk and instructed in preventive limb care, as well as provided appropriate clinical follow-up.
