U.S./Mexico Border Diabetes Project

This is a five year U.S./Mexico collaborative project to determine the prevalence of diabetes along the U.S./Mexico border and to develop and implement binational diabetes prevention and control programs that respond to the needs of the border population. The California Diabetes Program serves on the scientific and intervention advisory committees to ensure the California State perspective is included in the project. The project consists of two phases:

Phase I: Prevalence Study (projected completion in 2002)
Phase II: Intervention Program (projected completion in 2007)

Details:
Initial results from the Diabetes Prevalence Study on the U.S.-Mexico Border show that almost 16 percent of border residents have type 2 diabetes, and an additional 14 percent have pre-diabetes (fasting plasma glucose > 100, < 126 mg/dL). The border study also shows that almost 75 percent of the border adult population are overweight or obese.
