Literacy and Health Communication: Reversing the Inverse Care Law

The relationship between literacy and health, and the disproportionate burden of limited literacy borne by disenfranchised populations, also reflect serious and fundamental forms of social injustice outside the healthcare context that interact with and further confound clinical care. It appears that the confluence of these parallel processes can impede clinicians' willingness to engage in advocacy efforts because they may view the problem as outside of their immediate spheres of influence and daily work.
